Mauritius - Overview

Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean about 800km east of Madagascar and 2,000 km off the nearest point of the African mainland. This small sub-tropical island occupies an area of 1864 km2 and was shaped by two series of volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. Mauritius is mostly of volcanic formation and is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs. A coastal plain, widest in the north, rises sharply to a 1,500 ft high plateau bordered by three mountain ranges - the Black River Range, the Grand Port Range, and the Moka Range. The longest river is the Grand River South East, about 25 miles in length.

Although Mauritius is a small island, the scenery is contrasting; ranging from the drier regions of the north-west to the lush green of the east coast. A spine of dramatic volcanic mountains cut through the central area dictating the change in the prevailing weather conditions. The contrast of a multitude of colours and tastes, the island set in its turquoise sea, is an oasis of peace and tranquility.

The island is able to offer holiday makers the utmost in luxury and service and invites you to experience their five star resorts. The One&Only St Geran and LeTousserok Resorts exude prestige and grandeur, whilst The Oberoi, Taj Exotica and Le Prince Maurice offer privacy and tranquility. Then of course there is the Royal Palm, known to all as the “grand maison”.

Mauritius offers visitors a beach holiday of a lifetime with superb snorkeling & diving. The island is renowned for its clothing industry and shopping boutiques and flea markets are located throughout the island. Mauritius is also home to the Assai Palm. The “heart” of the palm is removed to make one of the most delicious and famous salads known to all who have visited Mauritius ..,. The Millionaires salad.

Mauritius, a melting pot where past and present are smoothly blended together, offering an essential beauty that will compel you to return to its shores time and time again.  May your stay in Mauritius remain engraved in your memory forever.
