Maldives - Overview
The 26 atolls comprising the Maldives stretch from 600km (373 miles) southwest of Sri Lanka across the Equator, covering an area of the Indian Ocean the size of Portugal or the US state of Maine. Of 1,190 islands, just 200 are inhabited while an additional 90 have been transformed into resorts.
Maldivian culture is a distinctive blend of the different influences that have shaped the isles over the years – from African drumming to Oriental jewellery-work. Perhaps the most important element is ‘bodu beru,’ the huge drum (made of coconut wood and either goat hide or manta ray skin that gives its name to the hypnotically rhythmic traditional form of music and dance.
The atolls of the Maldives are formed from coral structures, separated by lagoons. The atolls are in fact part of a greater structure known as the Laccadives-Chagos Ridge, which stretches over 2000 kilometres. The islands are low lying with the highest point at approximately 8 feet above sea level. 'Faru' or ring-shaped reef structures form the atolls and these reefs provide natural defense against wind and wave action, on these delicate islands.
